Elvish Crown #1

My sister and I are avid fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's books, so we decided to make costumes for the release of The Hobbit, The Desolation of Smaug... I saw some awesome designs online, so I experemented with making this crown.

Step 1

Begin with sketching your approximate pattern, mine was quite messy as I changed it a lot as I was going. Make sure you measure your head before you start so you can decide the lengths for your pattern. I used 18gauge for the main parts of the crown and 24gauge for the joins. (About 1mm and 0.5mm)

Step 2
Then shape the wire to the pattern, twisting two wires together to make the main body. Then shape the other seperate pieces to attatch later.

Step 3
The next stage is beating the wire flat in some places to give the curves more shape. As I don't have an anvil, I settled with a hard piece of metal I found in our garage. I was quite pleased with the results.

Step 4
Now to put it all together: I placed the smaller pieces on the main body and wound a smaller grade wire (24gauge) around the joins to hold them together.

Step 5
Once I was happy with how it was holding together and the general shape I tinkered around with the way it sat on my head. I felt it was a bit loose, so I got a simple chain and clasp and added it to the loops at the end. Now I can adjust and tighten it at the back so it doesn't slip off.

Step 6

Once this was all finished, I still felt it needed something else. Eventually I decided on using some cheap pearl earings i'd picked up at Kmart. They were perfect. I bent the wire needle and poked it through one of the holes and used more 24gauge wire to secure them.
